Guy jumps of Building at Sosueme

- by Phil Cooper Email , 152 words

So last Friday at Sosueme a dude climbed up the building looked in the window at Dollar Cash Money djing and then fell 3 stories to Cxford Street! Many have theorised as to why he fell/jumped… Some say it was because the music was so good, some say because it was so bad, some say it was because when Dollah Cash Money saw him in the window they immediately changed the song to a Kriss Kross hit.

One thing is for sure, this guy had an attack of the crazies brought about by only being able to see inside Sosueme but not actually being allowed in. An affliction becoming far to common these days in the underage and cretin communities of Darlinghurst.

Watch and scream cause this shit is real…

ps. We are only laughing at this because apart from a few broken bones this dude was ok…

Ghostwood

- by Muz. Email , 629 words

Ah, so the quesitons: Where Are They Now? It seemed that a while back, young Sydney-band Ghostwood was rattled off on the top of every list of ‘ones-to-watch’. The future was bright, the hyberbole was worthy… Then, a vast echoing silence. What happened?

Only a weeks ago, Ghostwood returned from a 20 month adventure that was purposed to immerse themselves in the British Motherland. After causing stirs of praise and a tide of whispers after being picked up as mere teenagers, plucked right out of high school by Modular Records – then at the zenith with a pre-recession surge of taste making & global recognition - the future looked bright for the young’uns in Ghostwood. With jangled, brittle darkness and layers of breathtaking razored energy that their live shows displayed, you would’ve bet a silver dollar that their travels in the UK would’ve spurned a wave of accolades, similar to the murmurs heard back home.

Now, returning home to weave their experiences in new sonic razors they have used as template for their live shows (and the new material is, by all accounts, brilliant…) we take a few minutes out with the boys and find that brevity is the order of the day, so it’s probably best that you let their first live show in almost 2 years – this Wednesday at the launch night of F.R.I.E.N.D/s – speak for itself.

1.Guys never do that to us again! It’s been far too long, did you miss us in Sydney?
yes and no, but more no than yes. though we did miss our fans and the support they gave.
2.What were the main influences on your writing while you were over in the mother land?
everything influences you, but i couldn’t say what could be a main influence, whether it was all the many records we bought or the many picnics in london fields, missing home or enjoying the freedom.

3.On the plane trip home who is the most annoying to sit next to and why?
two of us have a fear of flying, and the other two are fine, but im not telling who’s who.

4.What different can we expect from ghostwood these days?
just heaps madder.

5.Compare and contrast drunk yobbo English men and women with Australian drunkards.
Englishmen can still have a great insight into beatles and oasis songs after a hundred pints, but Australians just talk about how tall peter garret is.

6.What movies did you get on the plane?
twister and the castle.

7.Are you all sporting moon tans and an appetite for horrendous food?
not really, but we all have awful diets, except crandles, he’s a real fitness freak.

8.What’s the one thing you missed most about the Australian music scene?
i didn’t really, a shows a show, it doesn’t matter where you are as long as people like what you’re doing.

9.Have you ever thought about starting a game show called ” Would you? Ghostwood “
never.

10.Are there any plans for hitting the studio with new travel experience tunes?
we already have demoed some tune but there are many things baking in the sonic oven.

‘F.R.I.E.N.D/s’ - held at Paddington’s ubercool & sleek ‘caberet-vs-hunting lodge’ styled Fringe Bar on Wednesday nights starting this week, has set a solid amount of radness on it’s books for July. Alongside Ghostwood on opening night is the ever dancefloor filling Bag Raiders, with the following week hosted by Sydney party stalwarts Gus Da Hoodrat, Kato & Anna Lunoe, and Beni (from Kitsune) & Ajax distributing the goods for the rest of the month of Wednesdays. We’re picturing miles of midweek hangovers: with F.R.I.E.N.D/s like this, who needs weekends?

The Gameboys

- by Muz. Email , 241 words

Name: The GameBoys

How did you get your DJ name?

Well we originally wanted to be called the GayBoys but there was a typo on our first ever flyer and the name GameBoys just stuck with us.

In a nutshell, describe what you play.
Anything from disco to nu wave. Whatever keeps the people moving.

What made you start DJing?
Chicks, late nights and discotech.

What can you remember about your first gig?

Being very nervous, not being able to find the plug for our headphones, couldn’t turn the filters off and it lasted for six hours.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen in a nightclub?

A midget in a top hat with a cane trying to trip people as they walked by.

Name the funniest record you’ve ever played…
The Monster Mash by Bobby Picket. It was a Graveyard smash.

What’s the worst bootleg you’ve ever heard?
Robin S – Show Me Love mashed with the Bag Raiders Fun Punch and Salt n’ Pepa’s – Push It. It sounded dreamy.

The most idiotic request you’ve had as a DJ?
We we’re once asked to play anything from the high school musical soundtrack. We obliged.

What’s the best thing about Sydney clubs?
The people and the music. Xo

Where are your next gigs?
We’ve got gigs coming up at Kit and Kaboodle, Moulin Rouge, Fringe Bar, Ruby Rabbit and Candy’s Apartment.

Sherlock's Daughter

1. Growing Up
In all of our families’ photo albums there are pictures of us each individually at two to five years old pretending to make music with some non-musical instrument object – there is a photo of Will hitting the bottom up an upturned bucket with a stick, Tim using a dustpan as a guitar, Liam playing a watering can like a bass, Jonti tweaking imaginary knobs on a desktop as though it was a synthesizer (three years old!). All except for Tanya – she hated music until she was about sixteen. She used to think the devil would enter inside her head through her ears if she ever heard a loud, melodic noise, so that was pretty scary to her. We still are quite a prepubescent band, so we don’t know the end to this ‘growing up’ answer yet.

2. Inspirations
As a collective we share some musical favourites, particularly Moondog, Sonic Youth, Steve Reich, David Bowie, Animal Collective et al. We do have moments where we sit down and experience something together, like the CAN DVD, and we all clicked on Grzzly Bear at the EXACT same moment… But we are all also inspired by things other than music – like art, animals, films, clothing, madness. Being a musician to us means absorbing many different expressions of creativity and responding to them by creating a noise: a texture, melody, mood.

3. Your Band
We are 5.
Jonti
Tim
Tanya
Will
Liam.
We have been together for roughly a year and a half, and in this time we’ve experienced some pretty fluid line up changes that have always involved the same family members coming and going. We are all quite different to each other, but the best part about this is that everyone is able to bring something completely unique to the music, and we think this is why is works (does it work?) We do argue sometimes, though it’s never turned ugly… well it did once, but we are all OK now.

4. The Music You Make
We recorded our soon to be released debut EP with Jono Ma from Lost Valentinos, he’s a really talented producer. We recorded it in the studio where we rehearse, which made for a great, organic and more relaxed recording experience. It involved improvising with soundproofing, late night organic throw-out hunts, too much coffee, hearing things over and over and over again until nothing made sense anymore. We’re very proud of it, given it is our first effort. It kind of sounds like dogs, possums, piglets, kittens, deer, llamas and tortoises.

5. Music, Right Here, Right Now
We’d love for our music to reach an international audience, although we definitely believe there is a LOT of amazing, creative things happening in Sydney at the moment. We have a love/hate relationship with Ghoul – we think they are brilliant, but wish we didn’t. There are loads of really genuine bands emerging at the moment – Songs, Megastick Fanfare, Parades, Seekae, No Art – and we are really excited to feel a part of this new grade.

1. Growing Up
My life changed when my kindergarten teacher played “Yellow Submarine” for the class. I went home and dug out my old man’s dusty Beatles record collection and listened to it exclusively for about 5 years. The first concert I went to was Neil Diamond, and I couldn’t believe that one man could be that cool (I was a weird kid. Still am). Eventually I was playing power-chords along with Green Day in high school, but the master class in melody-writing you get from listening to the Beatles never left me.

2. Inspirations
My all-time favourites are the Beatles, Ben Folds, Midnight Oil, Crowded House and Billy Joel. But I’m probably more influenced by bands like Green Day and the Foo Fighters, and what you might call relatively straight-forward rock. I’m a bit of a melody-snob, and I have a new favourite song every few days. I listen to bands like The Basics, Birds of Tokyo, Fountains of Wayne, Coldplay and a few popstars which I can’t put in print without the other members of the band stringing me up.

3. Your Band
I (Michael) write the songs and sing them and play guitar, AJ (the car hoon and father of two) plays the bass and Jordan (the younger skinnier brother of AJ) hits the drums. We do have pretty varied taste in music, but since I write the songs I get a good say in the kind of music we actually play! We got together in about 2003 when a mutual friend and guitar player introduced us all. He disappeared to Africa the following year (no joke…but he did return eventually sleeping sickness-free) and we became a three piece by default. But we’ll be an 8 piece for our EP launch at QBar with a whole stack of guests including a brass ensemble that will make you wet your pants, and help us live up to the recordings (it was a pretty damp process).

4. The Music You Make
Our latest CD ‘Greatest Days’ won Triple M’s 2009 Unsigned Find and has been played on the station nationally for the last few months. It’s rock/pop/alt-folk-country-indie-modern-rock. When we tried to line up a gig at The Basement they told us “it’s just too intense, it just kicks you in the balls from start to finish” (direct quote). We’ve got songs that fit the three minute radio rock mould, but we’ve also got 6 minute songs with trombone solos and hillbilly fiddles and songs with pirate oom-pah break downs. Our new CD was recorded at Albert Studios in Sydney with Lamar Lowder (Jerk, Yothu Yindi, Art vs Science). And best of all, you can download it for free from our website, so do it right now! www.nilbymouth.com.au

5. Music, Right Here, Right Now
It’s a mixed up music world lately. The popstar chicks are singing along to crunchy electric guitars while the indie kids are playing with keyboards and programmed sounds. There’s a lot of music around and it’s more accessible than ever and I guess the industry is a bit more democratic. But there’s definitely a lot of noise around, and plenty of electro stuff that doesn’t get my melody-snob approval (excluding the likes of Art vs Science, MGMT and Empire of the Sun of course!!), but still plenty of chances for up and coming (rock) acts to find an audience in Sydney.

Calling in Sick

- by Muz. Email , 250 words

How would your mum describe you?
M - Too fat
T - Too skinny

What’s one genre you would remove off the face of the earth and why?
We don’t have a problem with any genre. Who the hell are we to say one type of music is better than another? Each to their own.

Who inspires you musically?
The Belgrave Boys - The hard working folk at Carlton United and Coopers Breweries - the amazing staff and patrons at The Lord Roberts Hotel, East Sydney - and the creative genius behind Bar Reggio’s Pizza

Name three tracks currently detonating your dancefloor
Thomas Bangaltar - Signatune
The Bar Kays - Holy Ghost
Wu-Tang Clan - Da Mystery of Chessboxin

Tell us about a classic clubbing moment
This will sound like such a wank but seeing Daft Punk was classic.

What’s one record you’re embarrassed to admit you own?
II - Boyz II Men (although the first track, “Thank You” is still hot. Super gay but hot.)

Spike Milligan quipped he’d like his tombstone to read ‘I told you I was ill’ – what would be on yours?
“We told you we were sick”

Imagine you’re on death row. What’s your last meal request?
Megan Fox

Name one person living or dead you’ve love to party with.
Megan Fox. Nuff said.

Who’s your +1?
Megan Fox…. That’s pretty fucking creepy now… If you’re reading Meg, we’re totally joking… unless you’re interested… then we’re 100% serious. Seriously…

New PNAU Album inbound...

- by Muz. Email , 220 words

Interesting that at the same time Parklife announces Empire of the Sun’s first ever LIVE show, Empire of the Sun announce that Nick Littlemore won’t be touring with the “band"… don’t quite know how that works… while we’re at it why don’t we cast Luke Steele and all other live elements and have the second rate “concept” album play on CD while backing dancers keep the illusion alive for the gurning masses. At least it comes with some good news, a SITREP on the highly anticipated new PNAU album. Courtesy of IMC:

As has now been officially announced, Nick Littlemore will not be touring with Empire Of The Sun. However, get excited as Nick and his equally clever partner, Peter Mayes collectively and famously known as PNAU are right now (in fact as we type) completing the recording of their brand spanking new album in a hidden location in the USA - being the follow up to their last internationally acclaimed self titled album.

With Pnau now having taken up official residence in London, we can reveal that this new album will be released this year and that PNAU will be returning to Australia in late 2009 presenting their jaw dropping live spectacle of a show to coincide with the album release. Stay tuned for show news coming your way soon.
